Tearing people down

Why is it that as a human race we seem to revel in tearing people down. Look at celebrities for example. We lift them up to the top and then we seem to revel in the gossip when they fall.
How does this translate in our Christian walk?
Unfortunately you would have a certain level of expectations from other Christians but the flesh seems to win out for many. Instead of encouraging one another we sometimes come off as judgmental and harsh.

Now I realize with bringing this to your attention you might say “Joe, you are tearing people down” and that’s a fair statement. But when we disagree should we be tearing down Christian brother and Sisters as a result of our disagreement?

Unfortunately some Christians lack maturity to realize where they are at to properly analyze where others are at. Sometimes that takes life experience. Marriage, children, buying a home, age etc. As each year passes and we pass through life we will grow spiritually.

I’m not opposed to Christians being critical of other Christians or non-believers. Sometimes condemnation can be a good thing but when it’s all you do it becomes a concern.

So many Christians have turned away from the traditional teachings of the church to preachers like Joel Osteen. Why? Because of the positive message, or worse they leave Christianity entirely. People are tired of being beaten over the head and others being critical. Christians can be the harshest critics of all. But we don’t have to have a candy coated gospel like Osteen and we should be wary of anyone who makes a tidy profit from the gospel.
Yes, I said anyone.

But more to my point. There are a lot of believers out there but they aren’t on track. We can tear them down or we can offer a message of encouragement. God is in our corner rooting for us why can’t we encourage one another? Instead of getting prideful with our bible knowledge or arrogant in our stance toward others how about actually sharing the gospel and scriptures with one another?

Some of us are so intent on being right that we forget we are nothing without Jesus and maybe we should act more like he did. We can encourage anyone including non-believers with a positive word. It doesn’t all have to be fire and brimstone. But the same applies to the body as well.

1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
12 But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction,
13and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another.14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

I so agree! We all need encouragement in this harsh world. And more so as we see the end approaching, & things getting worse. We are all in the same boat! A smile and a kind word can lift someone’s spirit when they are having a bad day, or going thru some trial, just being reminded that there are still good people in the world is such a comfort! Bless you, Joe, for that reminder!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for this post, its so apt! I just posted something over at my blog on the lack of condemnation Jesus displayed towards those he met, especially the woman who was caught in the act of adultery.

My dad always says that the Church is the only army that shoots its wounded. It shouldn’t be so; that’s not the example Christ gave us.

    Thanks again for this post.
